ACT- SO Committee

Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics

ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) honors academic and cultural achievers at the same level as sports achievers. ACT-SO members recruit 9th through 12th grade students annually for an academic competition. The NAACP believes that African-Americans can succeed and compete at the same or superior levels as their counterparts in classrooms, boardrooms and laboratories throughout the world.

Armed Services & Veterans Affairs Committee

The Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Committee focuses on Armed Services and Veterans programs at the local, state and national levels to ensure they are administered fairly for minorities. The committee studies conditions pertaining to minorities and their families and handles discrimination complaints from members of the Armed Services and Veterans.

Economic Development Committee

The Committee on Economic Development focuses on preserving and expanding economic empowerment among African Americans and other communities of color by. The committee researches and establishes relationships with private and public entities; supports the work of the National Office in monitoring the progress and activity of private and public entities designated by national programs; implements local efforts to promote the growth of business ownership; increases employment and job creation; and encouraging business development and home ownership.

Education Committee

The Committee on Education focuses on eliminating segregation and other discriminatory practices in public education, investigating the public school system and school zoning, stimulating school attendance, investigating the effects of standardized and high-stakes testing practices, promoting parental involvement in education, and monitoring school board activity and report.

Health Committee

The Committee on Health focuses on promoting, protecting, and maintaining the health of African Americans, assessing the community's health needs, advocating for equal access to health education, care, and treatment, and sponsoring health-related activities such as health forums, fairs, and workshops highlighting issues of importance to people of color.

Housing Committee

The Committee on Housing focuses on assessing housing conditions in the local community and oppose all restrictive practices, whether public or private; receiving, acting on and at times, referring complaints of housing discrimination; studying and implementing new methods of financing to promote home ownership; promoting home ownership in communities of color.

Legal Redress Committee

The Committee on Legal Redress shall investigate all cases reported to the branch and supervise all litigation in which the Branch is involved.

Membership & Life Membership Committee

The Membership & Life Membership Committee focuses on maintaining and increasing the Association's membership, planning and organizing annual membership campaigns, soliciting new members, securing renewals, and obtaining Life Members.

Political Action Committee

The Committee on Political Action is non-partisan and shall not endorse candidates for public office. The committee seeks to increase civic engagement to include voter registration and voter turn-out on election dates; works for the enactment of municipal, state, and federal legislation designed to improve the educational, political, and economic status of minority groups, seeks the repeal of racially discriminatory legislature; works to improve the administration of justice and secure equal enforcement of the laws.

Religious Affairs Committee

The Committee on Religious Affairs develops and promotes an educational program designed to give moral and ethical interpretation to the civil rights struggle; acts as a liaison to organized religious groups of all faiths; enlists the support of such organized religious groups for membership, fundraising, and the struggle for equality and full civil rights; and provides resource relations assistance for religious education and social action activities, associated with the
improvement of race.

Women in NAACP (WIN) Committee

The WIN Committee shall support, galvanize and enhance the leadership role of women around social justice issues affecting women; serve as an advocacy vehicle for social, economic, political, educational and health and welfare issues affecting women, advocate for the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual development of children.

Young Adult Committee

The Young Adult Committee shall stimulate young adult membership interest through advocacy training and solicit memberships of 21-40 years of age; establish and maintain a mentorship program to serve as a support bridge from Youth and College to Branch participation; provide networking and social opportunities for young adults within the NAACP and the Houston community.
